Lumbar epidural injections provide direct and effective relief for lower back and leg pain, especially in people with herniated discs, spinal stenosis, degenerative disc disease, or sciatica. During the procedure, a healthcare provider injects a mix of corticosteroid (to calm inflammation) and local anesthetic (to ease pain) into the epidural space around the spinal cord and nerve roots. This targeted injection reduces swelling and pressure on irritated nerves, which can quickly ease pain, numbness, tingling, or burning sensations that travel down the legs.

Using fluoroscopic (X-ray) guidance, the provider positions the needle with precision, making the procedure safe and accurate. Most patients feel only mild discomfort during the injection and resume light activities soon after. Pain relief often begins within a few days and can last for several weeks or months.
